10 Things-To-Do In Ko Samui (Thailand)

Ko Samui is a small island but Thailand’s second largest island. It lies in the Gulf of Thailand & is known for its palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves, small mountains & lush rainforest. Ko Samui has also become one of the luxury resorts destination & high-end spas. At Ko Samui the maximum tourists spends a large part of their time in the beaches, however, there are few more things that you can do here other than being a beach bump! Here are the Top-10 things that you can do at Ko Samui.


No.1: Sightseeing of Local Attractions

Koh Samui has several sightseeing places and attracts both tourists and locals alike. The most notable of them is the Big Buddha temple which sits on a small rocky island & locally known as Wat Phra Yai. It is a 12-metre golden seated Buddha. Another tourist attraction is the Wat Plai Laem, which is a Buddhist temple compound featuring a white 18-arm image of Guanyin. If you are taking a tour program then you will obviously be taken to Hin Ta and Hin Yai. It is rock formations commonly known as Grandpa (Ta) and Grandma (Yai). For the breath of my life I can’t understand the fascination about it because it allegedly represent the male phalange. If you are going on your own, you can happily skip this attraction. Another interesting attraction is the ‘Mummified Monk’ at Wat Khunaram. The monk Luong Pordaeng died in 1973 in a seated meditative position, yet remarkably, the body shows little sign of decay.

No.2: Visit Ang Thong National Marine Park.

Ang Thong National Marine Park is situated around 28-30 kms away from Koh Samui town and is a archipelago of 42 islands in the Gulf of Thailand. It is remarkable for its limestone mountains, lucious jungle with waterfalls, white sand beaches, secret coves and several lakes! It is a protected area & is filled with exquisite flora and fauna. Here you can indulge in hiking, snorkelling, kayaking, diving, etc.

No.3 Fisherman’s Village Samui

Fisherman’s Village Samui is a historical part with old-world type buildings & it houses boutique, uptown restaurants and several trendy hotels. Every Friday the whole area becomes a Walking Street market and is a shopper’s paradise.

No.4 Koh Tao Island

This island is 55 km from Koh Samui & Koh Tao means ‘Turtle Island’ & is excellent place for scuba diving. It is a white-sand beach hilly island surrounded by the crystal-clear waters. The coral reefs are vibrant with wide range of exotic sea creatures, including turtles. This island even boasts of several hotels, restaurants & nightlife.

No.5 Na Muang Waterfalls

Na Muang Waterfalls is found inland (about 12 kms) & can be reached only by walking across uneven areas for about 10 mins. It is basically two waterfalls, the first waterfall Na Muang 1, flows down into a natural pool. However the 2nd waterfall is another 30 minutes uphill by foot smaller Na Muang 2.

No.6 Secret Buddha Garden

Secret Buddha Garden is located in the hills in Koh Samui’s interior. It has an unusual collection of statues in middle of the jungle. Nim Thongsuk created the garden since 1976 & depict animals, deities & also humans.He died at the age of 91.

No.7 Cabarets

Thailand is famous for its cabarets, mainly the cabarets by ladyboys. You can enjoy a glittery evening full of fun & entertainment. A typical show involves lip-synched performance on popular songs  & the performers being dressed in elaborate costumes and make-up.

No.8: Samui Butterfly Garden

Samui Butterfly Garden is also known as Na Tian Butterfly Garden, is in the south of the island & offers a huge collection of colours spectacular butterflies. There is also an Insect Museum & a bee house. The landscaped garden features many tropical flowers too.        

No.9: Ziplining Experience at Secret Falls Canopy Adventures

Ziplining will rush you over the lush green rainforest, amazing waterfalls & spectacular scenery at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour (80 km/h)! It’s not for the faint-hearted! You will be picked-up from your hotel & taken to the island’s mountain forest. At the base camp there will be a quick safety briefing & then taken to the line. You will be covering around 2 km with 18 platforms in-between.

No.10: Koh Samui Water Activities & Tours

 Koh Samui is swamping with various water activities, including cruises and water tours. The relative clarity of the water and the exotic marine life makes its perfect for snorkeling, diving, kayaking, etc. You can also go yachting by chartered yacht.
