New York & Its Most Iconic Structures

 

No city is as famous as New York for its skyline… with towering buildings co-existing with smaller box-shaped buildings, retro-designs mixing with modern glass & steel architecture… the New York structures are a sight on its own and can be best appreciated when we know where is it and why is it so remarkable! So, in my this post I am covering some of the most iconic structures of New York that you would see in your visit to this vibrant city or might already have seen it in print or media.

Before I go ahead I must tell you that I saw all this remarkable structures and a quite a few more by catching a Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus (hope you know what that is?) and therefore it was utlra cheap and fun too! I could get down wherever I want and tour the city as many times as I wanted throughout the day! So friends, here are the top structures of New York that you must see!

Empire State Building:

When you pass by this building look-up to see the stone falcons at its basat, because they have been part of many Hollywood movies then the building itself! It is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City & has observatories in its 86th and 102nd floor, which provides unobstructed 360° views of the City and surrounding areas from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. It is within comfortable walking distance from Macy’, Herald Square, Bryant Park, Madison Square Garden, Flatiron Building, Madison Square Park, Theater District & Times Square. Click here for further information about this famous structure.

720 Park Avenue

This building is is a historic residential building in Lenox Hill (Upper East Side Manhattan) and the city’s most exclusive and prestigious buildings. When passing by, crane your neck to take a close look at the top-part of the building and then you will see this beautiful architectural details from the 1928 (when it was built). Recently a 7,000-square-foot duplex was sold for whopping $22.5 million! Now you know how prestigious it is!

Flatiron Building

This building is famous for its unique triangular slim structure and when it was completed in 1902 this steel- framed landmarked building was considered a remarkable architectural achievement. Honestly speaking, when I stood near it I was a bit worried about my own safety as the building looked so fragile and I was wondering how is it even standing?

Trinity Church

Trinity Church looks awkward standing in-between all the skyscrapers of  Manhattan’s Financial District. It was built in the Gothic Revival tradition & its spire is remarkable! It was declared a national landmark in 1976.

New York Bridges & Tunnels

New York has over 2,000 bridges and tunnels and many of the city’s major bridges and tunnels have broken or set records. It would become extremely boring for you if I rattle on about them, so I am giving you the names of this structures and you can choose which to see and which not to! Fair enough?

• The Holland Tunnel was the world’s first mechanically ventilated underwater vehicular tunnel.
• The Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge were the world’s longest suspension bridges when opened.
• The George Washington Bridge  is the world’s busiest bridge in terms of vehicular traffic.
• the Brooklyn–Battery Tunnel opened in 1950, it was the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in North America.
• The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is a double-decked suspension bridge that connects the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn.

One World Trade Centre

This is one building that can conjure up so much of strong emotions… It was built in the ground where the World Trade Center stood and was destroyed in the Sep’2011 terrorist attack. It was a very humbling experience. Do go and visit inside, you won’t be disappointed. By the way, this picture was taken during my ferry-ride, which is another ‘must-do’ thing in New York and I will come back to it in another post.

Time Square

The famous time square! We spent considerable part of our free time in the Time Square, strolling around, window shopping, watching street artists, eating street foods and watching life go by in general! It was an amazingly vibrant experience and I would advice that you must take your time at this place to truly enjoy it!

Statue of Liberty!

No visit to New York is complete without a visit to the iconic Statue of Liberty! She is made of copper and was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States! Do you know who this lady is and what her book is all about? Well, she is Libertas, Roman goddess of liberty and in her left hand she carries a tabula with the roman inscription meaning July 4, 1776 (date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence) & a broken chain lies at her feet!
